About Caring for Steel Products
Caring for Products Made of Non-Galvanized Steel
Caring for Products Made of Non-Galvanized Steel (also known as carbon steel or "stainless" steel when it is not stainless) requires special attention, as this type of steel is prone to rust and corrosion. Here are some steps and tips to care for non-galvanized steel and extend its lifespan:
Caring for wooden handles: If the steel is combined with wooden handles, also care for the wood to prevent cracks and moisture absorption.
1. Regular Cleaning
Remove dirt and residue: Clean the steel regularly with warm water and a mild detergent. Use a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt, oils, or other residues.
Drying: After cleaning, dry the steel thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth to prevent water spots and rust formation.
2. Preventing Rust
Remove rust: If rust has already formed, remove it carefully using steel wool, a wire brush, or sandpaper. Be gentle to avoid scratching the surface.
Rust inhibitors: After cleaning, apply a rust inhibitor or a specialized steel care product to prevent future rust formation.
3. Protection Through Oiling or Waxing
Oiling: Apply a thin layer of mineral oil, machine oil, or specialized steel care oil to create a protective barrier. This is especially important for tools or items exposed to moisture.
Waxing: Alternatively, you can apply a layer of beeswax or specialized metal wax to protect the steel and give it a nice shine.
4. Avoiding Moisture
Dry storage: Store non-galvanized steel in a dry place. Moisture is the main enemy of steel and leads to rust.
Air circulation: Ensure the steel is well-ventilated to prevent condensation.
5. Protection from Aggressive Substances
Avoid acids and alkalis: Non-galvanized steel can be damaged by acids, alkalis, or salt-containing substances (e.g., seawater). Clean the steel immediately if it comes into contact with such substances.
Wear gloves: Sweat and skin oils can cause corrosion when handling steel products. Wear gloves to prevent this.
6. Long-Term Storage
Oiling before storage: If you won’t be using steel products for an extended period, oil them thoroughly and wrap them in acid-free paper or plastic wrap.
Vacuum sealing: For particularly valuable or sensitive steel items, vacuum sealing can help prevent moisture and rust.
7. Polishing (Optional)
Polishing for shine: If you want to enhance the appearance of the steel, you can polish it with a polishing compound and a soft cloth. This removes minor scratches and gives the steel a beautiful shine.
8. Regular Maintenance
Inspect: Regularly check the condition of the steel, especially if it is frequently used or exposed to moisture.
Re-oil or re-wax: Depending on usage and environment, re-oil or re-wax the steel periodically to maintain protection.
9. Special Care for Tools and Knives
- Sharpening: For steel knives or tools, regularly sharpen the edges and oil them to prevent rust and wear.
By following these care tips, you can significantly extend the lifespan and functionality of non-galvanized steel.
